Lines are required so that the individual components of a circuit can be connected to one another. Connection cables usually consist of copper wire that is covered by an insulating plastic sheath. In printed circuit boards (“circuit boards”) there are metallic conductor tracks in an insulating carrier material (mostly glass fibers with epoxy resin).

In circuit diagrams, lines are represented by straight or angled connection lines:

In circuit diagrams, the route of the lines, similar to tram plans, does not have to match the actual route of the lines in a real circuit. For example, circuit diagrams can under certain circumstances be made clearer by drawing in an additional kink, while in the actual circuit the cable runs linearly at this point. Lines in circuit diagrams rather indicate that components are connected to one another, not how they are physically arranged or how long the lines actually are.


Crossings and connections

If conductor crossings are unavoidable - especially with more complex circuits - it is normally assumed that there is no conductive contact between the crossing conductors.

A conductive connection between two (or more) conductors is explicitly marked with a black point in circuit diagrams.

The ground

The voltage provided by a power source always relates to a basic level; this is normally \ unit [0] {V} and is referred to as “mass” (also “ground” or “GND”). Both positive and negative voltages that occur in AC circuits relate to this base level. In DC circuits, the ground level usually corresponds to the negative pole of the power source.

In circuit diagrams, a large number of lines are often connected to ground. In order to avoid line crossings, which often make circuit diagrams appear confusing, the lines to the ground connection are often "cut off" and the ground symbol is drawn in instead.

In more extensive circuits, the second variant is preferred, since this avoids confusing lines or line crossings. In a real circuit, all such “grounded” points must of course also be physically connected to one another.


Microfuses

Fine fuses are used to prevent excessive current flows in a circuit and thus possible damage to the components. A microfuse consists of a very thin wire in a glass envelope, which "melts through" if the current is too high.
